The Robert Landgren – Jack Hauck Wildlife Management Area is located six miles southeast and one-half mile south of Washburn, North Dakota along Highway 1804. This 255.3-acre tract of land was purchased with partner funding provided by American Foundation For Wildlife, North Dakota Natural Resources Trust, North Dakota Game and Fish Department, and a North American Wetland Conservation Act grant. This land will be managed for wildlife conservation, flood control and public access and is adjacent to the Painted Woods Wildlife Management Area, which is important wildlife habitat for migratory birds, ring-neck pheasants, wild turkey and whitetail deer.

This project started with a locally led vision that had tremendous support by McLean County citizens, area landowners, the Water Resource District, and County Commissioners. The need to reduce the impacts to private property from several devastating flood events in the 2000’s was the incentive to find a long-term flood solution. The proposed acquisition was approved by the Natural Areas Acquisition Advisory Committee and Governor in the spring of 2016. The property was purchased on July 19, 2016 by American Foundation For Wildlife and ownership was transferred to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department in November 2016.

The dedication of this land is a tribute to partners working together on a common mission.
